Thanks, Ravi! Looking good — I’m trying it right now at “Almost A Movie.”

I like that you’ve made the S icon easy to remove and given us the option to have the sidebar on all the time.

There was one thing I changed in the past, but now I can’t remember where it was located. The first letter of each post has that bold red font, but I’d like to omit it. Do I look for that code in the CSS or in one of the other template files?

    • ravi writes:

Mike, in fact I thought I had removed it from the style, since even I was somewhat ambivalent about it, but it looks like I did not (remove it). You can make the change by editing style.css (in your Site Admin -> Theme Editor) and removing (at around line 702), the following:

        .entry > P:first-child:first-letter
        {
            color: #662222;
            font-size: larger;
        }

This template doesn’t seem to work verry wel. With WP 2.7 I get javascript errors. The initSBMargin() doesn’t seem to be defined. Also some parts of the site seem to overlap

Even this site has the Javascript problem. Just open this site in IE. If you have script debugging enabled you will get an popup if you want to debug.

    • domesticdad writes:

I had the same problem but I figured out you have to go to widgets and turn on the “pages” widget…Then you have no problem…It shows up in the side bar as well…

  • Richard_Cream writes:

RIchard, did you go to the Theme Editor and add the necessary sections? If you look at my site, you will see that pages do show up, so it is possible in Ahimsa. Please ping me if you need more help and I will be glad to give further info.

Richard, on second thought, perhaps I have misunderstood your issue. What do you mean by “nav bar”? I was thinking of the sidebar, but perhaps you are speaking of something else?

    • ravi writes:
      January 20th, 2009 at 12:26 pm

Shaun, you will probably find WP plugins that can accomplish what you want, and which should work with most templates/themes. Themes that support widgets (a requirement for any new theme) are probably a safer bet. I haven’t done any work with ads so I am afraid I don’t know what is involved, but if you have more specific questions I can still try to take a shot at answering them.

      • Shaun writes:
        January 20th, 2009 at 1:58 pm

        • ravi writes:
          January 25th, 2009 at 2:27 pm

Shaun, I can think of no reason why it won’t work in Ahimsa. I believe I am fully widget compliant in my code. If you try some paid ads widget or plugin and it doesnt work, feel free to ping me for help.

I loved this theme, it was so easy to modify the colours to something else, but unfortunately friends who used Opera couldn’t even render some pages so it’s been removed.

    Good job anyway though. :)

    • ravi writes:
      January 25th, 2009 at 2:16 pm

What version of Opera are they using? In Opera 9.63 I am seeing little issues other than that there are no rounded borders and there is an annoying tan coloured bar at the top of the comments section with a “Reply” link in it, that is confusing.

      • SCdF writes:
        February 24th, 2009 at 4:20 am

I have similar issues in Opera– specifically Opera 9.63 in Windows and Linux. The lack of rounded corners is fine, but it does not correctly render comments at all.

Check out the following two pictures depicting the same blog post at the same time:
        http://mylittlepwnage.com/misc/blogTheme/Firefox.png (Firefox 3.06 Linux)
        http://mylittlepwnage.com/misc/blogTheme/Opera.png (Opera 9.63 2474 Linux)

The whole comment section doesn’t seem to render correctly. Also, if you don’t have threading comments it’s a little odd to have the outer part of the reply button but without the actual word ‘reply’.. prehaps the entire button should go.

        • ravi writes:
          March 6th, 2009 at 11:25 pm

SCdF, thank you for taking the trouble to attach the screenshots. I hope to have a new release of the theme up next week which should address many of these issues. The blank Reply button is annoying indeed (and this blank capsule appears in a few other places too). I will include fixes for it next week.

When the sidebar is closed (fadeSidebar js function initiated), the main content is a couple of pixels indented to the right – which takes away from the rounded corners effect in the browsers that support it. I’ve been trying to modify both the js and the css, but without any luck. Any suggestions?

Mark, I spent quite some time ironing out that issue so I am surprised it still shows up… can you show me some site or page where this happens? What browser are you using (and version)? I cannot reproduce the effect, so any info from you would be very useful. Thank you.

    • ravi writes:

Crystal, do you mean you would like the main content section to have a specific width? Or do you want to drill down deeper and have fixed width for the sidebar, etc? If you wish you can file a feature request at:

  • Crystal writes:

I was actually just talking about the main content area or at least I think that is what I am talking about. Basically I would just like the dark gray, white line, and the green in the far background to expand and contract when you adjust your browser window and not the actual text.

    • ravi writes:
      February 11th, 2009 at 2:13 pm

okay, so we are indeed speaking of the same thing. You want the main content area to have a static size. That’s possible… if you haven’t given up on the theme, can you contact me via email (code (at symbol) ahren (dot) org) and I can give you some small code changes you can make to the theme using the editor, to implement the change you want.

      Radheshyam,

go to your Admin pages and choose Appearance -> Widgets option. You can then drag in the Pages and Calendar widgets from the left to the current selections on the right. You then have to click on “Save Changes” at the bottom of the list on the right. That should do it.

I will try to post some screenshots next week.

    • ravi writes:
      February 11th, 2009 at 1:33 pm

      Otto,

a later version of the theme will let you upload and use an image banner. For now, in order to achieve this, you need to first upload the image somewhere, then edit the theme (either directly in the theme directory, or using the admin pages: Appearance -> Editor). Then you can modify Header (header.php) and add in an HTML “img” tag in the header, pointing to your image. If you need help, please ping me via email to code (at symbol) ahren (dot) org.

one more question: when I install this theme i always get the name of my blog stacked on the left, ie each word on one line. i notice here that the words “ahren code” are next to each other, not stacked..how do i do that on my blog? thanks

    • ravi writes:
      February 11th, 2009 at 1:22 pm

      Otto,

in order to prevent the word wrap, in my blog configuration, I set the title to be:

      Ahren Code

The “ ” is HTML speak for “no break space”. This prevents the browser from deciding to break the line at that point, when it makes its rendering decisions.

Try it out and let me know if it doesn’t work for you!

    • ravi writes:
      February 11th, 2009 at 1:18 pm

E.B, they can be modified, but in order to do that you have to edit the stylesheet. If you go to the Admin pages for your blog and choose Appearance -> Editor (this is WP2.7, for 2.6 or earlier you have to go to Themes -> Theme Editor, I think), you can then select the Stylesheet (style.css) and start hacking around with the colours. I am afraid I have not consolidated the colour scheme into the smallest set of entries, in the stylesheet. That will happen in Ahimsa 2.2 which will also include a few alternate colour combinations, as well as giving you the ability to set some of the colours to any colour of your choice.

Fernando, sorry my knowledge of Spanish[?] is close to zero. I think you want to translate the theme text into Spanish? If so, there is unfortunately not one single file that you have to change. You have to change, at least, single.php, index.php and page.php. Additionally, if you want the header and footer bars also in Spanish, then you have to edit header.php and footer.php.

I am hoping to internationalize my theme in one of the next few versions…

    • ravi writes:

Ged, I am trying to both make the theme presentable on IE7/8 and perhaps even IE6. However the rounded corners will not happen in IE since IE does not support any form of the CSS3 border-radius property :-(. At a later stage, I might use images to render the rounded corners, but that would be a sad backward step…

Great theme with lots of potential!

I can only second some of the request made in the bugtracker for really flexible theme. Especially thse two would make a huge difference and turn into an all-purpose theme:
    - option to have the sidebar on the right OR left
    - various color schemes (incl. self-defined ones)

Hope we’ll see this implemented soon!

The custom colour schemes is definitely coming in a couple of weeks (Ahimsa 2.2)… the choice of sidebar position (left or right) might also make it in, but that’s a bit tougher, and I don’t want to promise that for 2.2.

Hola Ravi, el theme esta muy bueno, pero me gustaria saber si se pueden poner las esquinas redondeadas para que se vean en el IE.

Mario, I use CSS3 properties in Gecko/WebKit (Firefox/Safari/Chrome) to render the rounded corners. That’s not possible in IE without using images or fancy table tricks, unfortunately.

    Hi,

I like your theme very well and use it on my website :-)

Is it possible, in a next version, to have a new sidebox horizontaly, just behind the title of the site (it would be nice for a few pages like ‘help’, ‘contact me’,….)

    Regards,
    Damien

Damien, a lot of people have asked for this feature. I will try to throw it into 2.2.

      Thank you for your comment.

I found a problem with the tags on posts: there is a closing but no opening before the tag list. To fix this I modified line 89 of index.php from:
    $before = ”,
    to
    $before = ”,

      The above should read:

Abishai, I think you mean the missing span tag? Actually, in this version, I decided to not do those capsules for the tags… because I found them a little too overwhelming. So, what I really need to do is remove the closing span tag! ;-) Do you disagree? Do you think the tags should be in capsules? I personally prefer the simpler comma separated version in this release.

To fix the problem with the first comment, look for this in “comments.php”:

Delete it and save the document.

En español, busca el texto de arriba en “comments.php”, guarda de nuevo el documento y se acabo el problema del primer comentario en la pagina del articulo.

  • piernodoyuna writes:

    Ok, can’t show code.
Delete line 28 to 32 in “comments.php” and save it

Can someone give me the quick php to do an ifelse around lines 28-32 in the comments.php file? Basically I want to skip those lines of code if the browser is IE. thanks!

      • ravi writes:

Orin, those lines are just comments. You can safely remove them. I did not terminate the comment properly which is why IE was messed up. Firefox/Safari are more forgiving!

    Hi Ravi,

I’m using your theme on my WP blog, however the fluid width feature doesn’t seem to be working quite right. It works perfectly fine for me on this blog, but on mine, it doesn’t fully reduce to the width of the window when I unmaximize or change the width of the physical window. Can you help point me at the right place to look to fix this?

    Cheers,
    Robert

      Hi Ravi,

Disregard. I failed to look at the actual content and noticed a very wide image. The code itself is perfectly fine.

I’m feeling a little like a bit of an idiot.

      Anyway, love the theme!

      Cheers,
      Robert

    Hi Ravi,

The themes do not support IE, there is a blank shown in the top of IE .

    • ravi writes:

Kalley, yes I think this is an issue with IE6. Are you using IE7 or 8? If so, then its much worse. I am working at this problem this weekend and I should have something up, hopefully, next week.

    Hi Ravi,
yet another WP virgin, but I managed to install Ahimsa in minutes – it’s excellent, thanks.

In response to previous posts re: ‘ads’, Google AdSense works perfectly with your theme – even managed to colour code the ads to match at: worcestershirewebdesign.co.uk/blog

Tested my Ahimsa in 4 browsers and no issues with Firefox, Safari or Chrome – just wish I.E.7 was as good as them at doing it’s job…

    thanks again.

Ravi,Thank you for your attention. IE7 or IE8, I have not tried, but at a lot of people still using IE6, and I hope the best of CSS compatible with IE6. Finally, or thank you very much for bring us such a beautiful template.
    Yours kalley

Kalley, supporting IE6 is quite difficult (if you don’t believe me, see http://bit.ly/Qv0YE). However, in an update I hope to put out today or tomorrow, I will have better support for IE7/8, and some improvements for rendering in IE6. Please check it out and let me know what remnant issues you see.

Ok.. I’ve writte you before about this.
It bothers me that in this section… the reply/comment section above the “name” entry box is overlaped by the “Leave a Reply” lable.

can you do anything about this so that it does not overlap?

Dave, I think I have this fixed now (I am assuming you noticed this problem in IE?) and will have a release tonight or tomorrow.

I am having the width issue that is discussed. Your page loads fine and the width adjusts, mine doesn’t. Using Firefox3.

Nancy can you give me a URL where I can see your problem, or can you describe it in more detail? Thank you.
